ZHANG Peili
Born in Hangzhou in 1957.
Graduated from the China Academy of Art in 1984 (originally Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts), currently living and working in Hangzhou.
Zhang Peili was a primary member of the important ¡°Pond Society¡± during the ¡¯85 New Wave era. In his representative works Midsummer Swimmers, Jazz, and X? he treats the canvas summarily and dispassionately, revealing the artist¡¯s estrangement and feelings of distance from the real world. Zhang Peili¡¯s ¡°gloves¡± are most important painting series of this era, here he attempted to use the image of the glove to express reality¡¯s complicated relationship with man, at the same time encompassing ideas of cruelty, masochism and conspiracy. His video work 30x30 was the very first video-based work of art in Chinese contemporary art history, his works About X? Exhibition Chengxu and Art Plan No.2 are among the earliest of the ¡¯85 era¡¯s entirely documentary works.
