DING Yi
Born in Shanghai in 1962. Graduated from the Shanghai School of Arts and Crafts in 1983, and in 1990 graduated from Shanghai University¡¯s Fine Arts department, currently living in Shanghai.
Ding Yi began his exploration into abstract art in 1987 and beginning in 1988 he began painting his ¡°cross¡± series. The ¡°cross¡± is a technical term used in the printing industry that symbolizes accuracy. In his series of ¡°cross¡± paintings there is only the repetition of the singular theme, the endless vertical and horizontal expansions covering the entire canvas. In this repetition Ding Yi is searching for complete isolation and confinement of the ego, by confining his painting to this singular movement he is searching for the significance of process and composition of pure form. Since the late 80s the ¡°cross¡± motif has continued for almost twenty years and essentially without change, thus earning this series the dimension of time and a surprising degree of freedom.
