The name ¡°Xiamen Dada¡± comes from an exhibition held in Xiamen in 1986 from September 28 to October 5th, the ¡°Xiamen 86¨C¨CNew Dada Modern Art Exhibition,¡± the show concluded with the burning of the artworks. Xiamen Dada was China¡¯s first group to dispose with the tradition of handcrafted painting and to use extremist methods to materialize artistic concepts. They advocated the congruity of life and art and searched for creative possibilities outside of traditional painting, stressing the spiritual process within creativity and rejecting both materialistic and utilitarian aspects of art. They accordingly had a violent clashing with traditional aesthetics and accomplished an entirely new dialogue and discourse with the public.
