SHU Qun
Born in Jilin province in 1958. Graduated from the Traditional Painting department of the Luxun Academy of Fine Arts in 1982, currently living and working in Sichuan, Chengdu.
In 1984 Shu Qun, Wang Guangyi and others co-founded the important arts sect of the middle ¡¯85 New Wave period known as the ¡°Northern Arts Group.¡±
In 1980, Shu Qun Wang Guangyi, Gao Minglu and others collectively organized and planned the ¡°Zhuhai Conference.¡± They proposed ¡°Using the unfathomable textual resources of symbols of the order as weapons to combat the monolith symbolic order of the imperialist era.¡± Upholding rationality, the inevitability of choice, and abased circumstantiality became characteristics of Shu Qun¡¯s works of the 1980s; his works scarcely revealed disturbed, anguished or flippant and disorderly elements, but instead seeks a kind of strong, heavily methodical feeling. The Endless Road series and Absolute Principals No. 1 are his representative works from the ¡¯85 era. In his 1992 work Oneness Voice¨COrder of Religious Discourse, the artist follows his personal train of thought, it is an important work in which his artistic language matures.
