WEI Guangqing
Born in Huangshi, Hubei province in 1963. Graduated from the China Academy of Art, Oil Painting department in 1985, currently living and working in Wuhan.
Wei Guangqing is one of the representative members of the ¡¯85 New Wave art consortium¡¯s ¡°Hubei Group.¡± In Wei Guangqing¡¯s 1988 performance art work On Simulated Suicide Experience ¡®One¡¯ he raises Camus¡¯s theoretical central philosophical question: ¡°There is but one truly serious philosophical problem and that is suicide.¡± This work begins with a serious proposition that is transformed into a complete body of text, then is implemented as ritualized performance art and recorded by photographic means; finally it became an installation work. This process in itself is a collection of many characteristics of the ¡¯85 New Wave artists.
