WU Shanzhuan

Born in Zhejiang in 1960. Graduated from the China Academy of Art in 1986 (formerly the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Art), earned a Master¡¯s degree from Hamburg Academy of Art in 1995, currently living and working in Hamburg and Shanghai.

Between the years of 1986 and 1987, Wu Shanzhuan and his cohorts organized the ¡°Red Humor¡± exhibition creating a body of installation and performance works. Adopting the style, color and form of big character posters and slogans from the ¡°Cultural Revolution¡± they infused them with the language of contemporary politics, culture, poetry, religion and daily life, thus revealing the absurdity and abnormality of reality. This Afternoon the Water Shuts Off is a work that he began in 1987 that has continued until now and taken various forms. This ¡°Water Shutoff Notice¡± is a central idea in countless works by Wu Shanzhuan, and a metaphor for the unpredictable gulf between reality and interpretation. His use of social resources can be understood as the first signs that later evolved into Political Pop of the 1990s.
