LU Shengzhong
Born in Pingdu, Shandong province in 1952.
Earned a Master¡¯s degree from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1987, currently living and working in Beijing.
Lu Shengzhong¡¯s creative inspiration stems from his research and passion for folk arts, and during the ¡¯85 movement he began using the folk art of paper cutting creating a unique personal vocabulary of ¡°little red figures¡± and thereby initiating his special path to contemporary art. The series of works Life¨C¨CMoments and Eternity (1987), Chi Chu (1988), and Spirits Appear (1989) are an active exploration of the transformations and breakthroughs between the shape of Chinese folk arts and their modern significance. In his opinion, this is using ¡°the pure blood of ancient human civilizations to nourish and enrich souls that have been warped and damaged by modern civilization.¡± These ¡°little red figures¡± have remained Lu Shengzhong¡¯s primary artistic resource and motif since the 1990s.
