GENG Jianyi
Born in Dengzhou, Henan province in 1957. Graduated from the China Academy of Art in 1985 (originally Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts), currently living and working in Hangzhou.
Geng Jianyi was a primary member of the important ¡°Pond Society¡± during the ¡¯85 New Wave era. In the works Two People Under a Light, Haircut, Tap Water Factory he divulges a sardonic and apathetic attitude; stressing the relationship between emptiness and participation, he blends the experiences of the viewer into his painting. The Second State is his representative work of the ¡®85 era, underneath this powerful image there actually exists multiple layers of interpretation: it not only embodies a revolt against the oppression of modernity, it also pokes fun at those revolting against it; not only is it perhaps laughter, it can also be an angry or disappointed shout; it excites and stimulates people, yet is painted in undisturbed strokes. These contradictions are an accurate portrayal of the ¡¯85 New Wave era.
