XIA Xiaowan

Born in Beijing in 1958.
Graduated from the Central Academy of Art in 1982, currently living and working in Beijing.

Xia Xiaowan¡¯s works from the ¡¯85 New Wave period did not seek out innovation within a formal, spatial language, but instead ¡°yearned to return to the ego¡± and ¡°longed to reach an understanding with the world.¡± By manifesting a transcendental world and a personal awareness, his primary works Heaven and Earth, Supernatural, Fantasy, Ceremony, Soul, and Spirit, became metaphorical for the insignificance of the individual as well as the chaotic mess of reality. He often places absurd and humorous images of man in wild, expansive spaces to express his sentimental, poetic, magical, and classical feelings.
