HUANG Yongping

HUANG Yongping

Born in Xiamen, Fujian province in 1954. Graduated from the China Academy of Art in 1977. Currently lives and works in Paris.

In 1986, as one of the primary founders and representative members of the important ¡¯85 New Wave group Xiamen Dada, Huang Yongping definitively proposed: ¡°The attitude with which an artist treats his works symbolizes the artist¡¯s personal attitude of liberation.¡± Huang¡¯s work The History of Chinese Painting and the History of Modern Western Art washed in the washing machine for 2 minutes captured the feeling of cultural conflict in the 1980s, offering a response like a Zen Koan. Another set of works, the Non-expressive Painting series sought to sever the relationship between the artist and his works. After immigrating to Paris in 1989 his primary creative path has developed along dualistic critical schema. Reptile is the work Huang Yongping entered in the 1989 Pompidou Center exhibition "Magiciens de la Terre." This work is a metaphor for the transmigratory cycle of cultural birth and death. For this exhibition we have recreated the original work.
