SHEN Yuan
Born in Xianyou, Fujian province in 1959. Graduated from the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts in 1982. Since 1990 lives and works in Paris.
As a graduate of the Traditional Painting department, Shen Yuan¡¯s main interest lay in experimental ink and wash paintings; as the wife of Huang Yongping she was also a witness and accomplice to the Xiamen Dada. While participating in her first exhibition in 1989, the ¡°China/ Avantgarde,¡± a passing idea caused her to discover a new artistic path: her work Waterbed was an individual idea, while it intelligently expresses her intuitive reaction to society, politics, the state of life: supple and free, oppressing and suffocating, these kinds of contradictions were within the transparent exterior. Since immigrating to France, Shen Yuan¡¯s work has focused mainly on installation.
