YANG Jiecang
Born in Foshan, Guangdong province in 1956.
Graduated from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in 1982, currently living and working between Heidelberg and Paris.
Yang Jiecang¡¯s works exemplify how the ¡¯85 New Wave used a traditional spirit to break through traditional forms. During the ¡¯85 New Wave movement his artwork instigated a constructive dialogue between Daoist and Zen philosophies and contemporary art. He employed traditional ink and wash materials to create canvases that were completely unrelated to traditional methods of paintings. In these artworks elements of time and psychology replaced the element of space; the process replaced the canvas. His deliberations also frequently extended beyond the canvas, turning performance art and his way of life into art. In 1989, after immigrating to Germany and France, he gave broader expression to his themes through the use of new developmental and experimental forms of media.
