WANG Guangyi
Born in Heilongjiang, Ha¡¯erbin province in 1957. Graduated from the Oil Painting department of the China Academy of Art in 1984 (originally Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts), currently living and working in Beijing.
Wang Guangyi was a primary promoter and representative member of the important ¡¯85 New Wave consortium¡¯s ¡°Northern Arts Group.¡± His early works show influences of classical Western and classical philosophy, in his earliest period he chose classical Western paintings (such as Da Vinci¡¯s Mona Lisa) and executed schematic transformations upon them, he did his best to display the sublimity, quiet and solemn rationality of classicism. Around approximately 1985 Wang Guangyi completed the Polar Series, whose silent and solemn characteristics came to embody the overall characteristics of his works in this period. His post-¡¯85 works focused more on the criticism of authoritative images, becoming the structural basis for the Political Pop that followed in the 90s.
