Relocated to the United States in 1982,
currently living and working in New York.

Gu Wenda is among the most important artists of the ¡¯85 New Wave¡¯s early period. He underwent extensive technical training in Chinese traditional painting and calligraphy and also used passionate methods to integrate Western painting into ink and wash, which took shape in a fresh, humorous, and dramatic style on the canvas. He was also the first artist to use calligraphy and characters as a resource in his experimental art, and his works dabble in various languages such as ink and wash, oil painting and installation. After immigrating to New York in 1987 installation became his primary medium.
