LI Shan

LI Shan

Born in Lanxi county, Heilongjiang province in 1942. Graduated from Heilongjiang University in 1966 and the Shanghai Opera Academy¡¯s Set Design department in 1968 where he taught after graduation. Currently works and lives in Shanghai and New York.
Li Shan began experimenting with painting in the late 1970s; during the 85¡¯ New Wave period his creations had reached a new height; his style traversing both expressionism and abstraction. His abstract paintings are derived from his contemplations of man¡¯s primitive instincts, his Order Series, and Extension Series are representative works from this era. The artist¡¯s expressionist paintings of the same time formed a separate series of equal importance, but they were unfortunately destroyed in their entirety. Li Shan¡¯s paintings are representative of the desire that artists of the time had for a dynamic transformation in the language of painting. By the end of the 1980s, Li Shan¡¯s focus had gradually turned away from this transformation in painting to socially-oriented topics, causing him to become one of the representative artists of 1990s Political Pop.
