MAO Xuhui
Born in Chongqing in 1956.
Graduated from the Yunnan Arts Academy.
Currently lives and works in Kunming.
Mao Xuhui was a primary member of the New Representationalism and Southwestern Arts Group of the ¡¯85 New Wave movement. Henry Bergson¡¯s philosophy and German expressionism had great influence on his work; as he attempted to express the indescribable reality and a non-descript spiritual state surrounding us. In his opinion, ¡°in all great art, what we see is the spirit, the stirring utterances, the deepest inner trembling of sudden enlightenment.¡± His painting and collage works from the ¡¯85 period reflect his exploration into experimental painting, as well as comprehension of his inner reality.
